Welcome

Hadleigh Baptist Church, Essex is situated in the heart of the local community, where it has been a Christian witness to the surrounding streets and roads since the church first opened it's doors in 1926 - that is 9 decades of witness.

We welcome people of all ages and from all walks of life and this is reflected particularly in the make up of our Sunday morning services.

Christmas as you can appreciate is an important time in the Church’s calendar as we eagerly anticipate the anniversary of the birth of Jesus.

This page will give you information about the services around the Christmas period and insight into the Advent candles that we light on each of the four Sundays preceding Christmas.

We also share the good news of the birth of Jesus by sharing the Christingle with children from our local primary schools

Christmas Reflection 2018 from our Pastor

On Christmas Eve 1947 a German Bishop named Johannes de Watteville held a special children's service at his church in Marienborn, central Germany. The purpose of the service was to teach the children the joy people receive through believing in Jesus, and he did it by giving them a visual aid - a lighted candle wrapped in a red ribbon. And as the children stood around the dimmed church holding their lighted candles, the Bishop prayed this prayer over them: "Lord Jesus, kindle a flame in these children's hearts that theirs becomes like thine".

Unbeknown to the Bishop, the service he held that Christmas Eve was something that would capture the true meaning of Christmas, and 71 years later, the 'Christingle Service' as it is now known, is held by Churches up and down the country. Today it involves an Orange - which represents the world; 4 sticks of dried fruit or 4 sweet lollies inserted into the side of Orange - which represents God's provision and the 4 Seasons; a red ribbon tied around the middle of the Orange - which represents the love of God encircling the world; and a lighted Candle or Glow Stick inserted into the top of the Orange - which represents Jesus the Light of the World.

The Christingle is a simple but powerful image of how 2000 years ago, God in His love for spiritually lost humanity entered the world in the person of Jesus Christ. In Jesus God came into our spiritually dark world to pour out his light and love and draw people of all ages and from all nations into His light and love, and He did it by dying 33 years after His birth upon the Cross.

So as Christmas 2018 approaches, we would like to take the opportunity of inviting you and your family to our Services listed opposite which includes our Christingle Services, so that you also might discover God's love and light. Finally, on behalf of the members and congregation of Hadleigh Baptist Church, may you enjoy a blessed Christmas, and may you know true peace throughout 2019.

The Candle of Love

Love is like a candle shining in a dark place. As we look at the light of this candle, we celebrate the love we have in Christ
