Finishing Strong

To say that this year has been difficult would be a great understatement. Each and every year we all look forward to what it will bring and the time we can look forward to reflecting on the past and seeing how we have grown. This year, I suspect that many more of us will be thinking more about the future and wanting to forget what has happened. We have all had to suffer through different difficulties and had our share of pain and loss, some more than others. The reflectiveness of this season is more than just this year, it is remembering the reason for the season – Jesus.
We have a hope in something greater than ourselves. We have a faith in a saviour who came in the humblest of beginnings to save us. We have a reason to rejoice in the midst of sadness. We have a reason to hope. Romans 5:2b-4 And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. (NIV)
With that in mind, it is important to be able to reflect and look forward. Think about what you have learnt about yourself in this time. What have you found a renewed interest in? What things have you realised have a different importance in your life? What friendships have been built or have changed due to everything? Think back to how this year started and the plans you had. Consider what you are thinking now and reflect on this thought: How did you start and how will you finish this year?

The Personal God

Psalm 139 has been described as ‘one of the summits of Old Testament Theology’, which is a fitting description because as we journey through the Psalm, not only do we discover how God is the one who created us (v13 – 16), but also how God knows us intimately; who cares deeply for us; who accepts us for who we are; and who is the answer to the deepest needs and longing of every human heart (v1 – 10; v23 & 24).
